22/05/2009 - CQC launches with new plans for Class 3B/4 laser and IPL regulation.
While current processes remain in place for the time being, from October 2010 the Care Quality Commission (CQC) is introducing a new regulatory framework that will radically change to scope of who will need to register with the CQC.
In a document published earlier this week by the Department of Health (DH) setting out who will need to register with the new Commission, the DH referred to its proposed deregulation of the non-surgical use of class 3B and class 4 lasers and IPL equipment.
The DH acknowledged that the responses to the consultation process last year were "generally unsupportive" of removing registration from the scope of regulation under the Care Standards Act 2000. It said that current regulation under the CQC is not the most appropriate approach to laser and IPL deregulation and that it does not intend to include non-surgical use of lasers and IPLs within the scope of registration under the new system introduced by the 2008 act. However, the DH said it will work with the sector and representative bodies to find an alternative form of regulation that "better targets the specific risks associated with these activities."
Although it was initially thought that cosmetic class 3B and class 4 lasers/IPLs would only remain within current regulation until April 2010, the DH has extended this until October 2010, when it is hoped within the aesthetic medicine industry that a new means of regulation will be imposed.
